Zooey by RWappin Zooey by RWappin
I don't know how to do hair.

Well, a lot prettier than Danny DeVito at least.

EDIT 8/05/10 - Fixed the clothes so they look halfway decent

EDIT 8/06/10 - Completely redid the hair using a different technique. I like it a lot better now. :D

They both look like who they are, so pluses there! I like the hair, are you doing it strand at a time?

Nah, I kind of blocked it out first, then tried to add individual strands and highlights on top of it. I spent a lot of time just adding on top of it and re-working it.

oh wow man you've outdone yourself. Very nice job. While you may think you are lacking in the hair, I think it does work so it's not completely bad. I do kind of wish the clothes had a few more features to them other than a solid colour but other than that this is a very good piece man. Keep it up! :D

I think the hair didn't turn bad at all really. The area around her nose looks odd though, but I really like the eyes.

What specifically do you think looks odd about the nose?

It seems like it keeps the same opacity all the way through. It sets the shape of the nose, but it looks awkward; you could try smoothing the edges of the shade around the septum so that the contrast with the base skin color is subtler.

The hair's not bad, and the face is accurate, but is she wearing a blanket? XD

I didn't really put any effort into finishing the clothes, heh

After years of seeing your toony stuff I had to do a triple take at who did this. Wappin? But that's not his style... I'm a bit blown away right now.

Not bad. I think a good final touch would be to detail the clothing just a smidge

Lol, I'm assuming you mean to say it's always possible to improve on something?

No, I've just been to real artist studios before, painters really keep working on paintings for a long time, constantly adding things until they're certain they're done. I guess I mean that nothing's final until you think it is.

Yea well I'm done with this one. I need to figure out a more solid technique for doing hair. I also want to start doing pictures out of my imagination instead of based off pictures because that'll be a lot more fun/interesting.

Caricature? I hear caricature is good for portfolio items.

Aye, hair can be tricky in realism.

She does look nice here, though.

I think that's a little too overly self-critical. Considering your usual portfolio of work, I think this is an exceptionally great step into expanding your range of skills. It's often said that you can gain a better appreciation of art if you sample its many flavours, techniques and nuances - something which you seem to be embracing with gusto.

I think this is great work - and you should move away from over-analysing the details and concentrate more of the parts you've done really well with - the lighting and specularities in particular are superb in this, and give the model a beautiful, glowing aura. I really like this - and it's nice to see you trying your hand out at other styles, but certainly doesn't detract from the reality that your animation skills are tremendously accomplished as well!

Excellent work. You should be proud!
